Heriot family papers, 1843-1904.

Collection contains correspondence, legal documents, property records, and miscellaneous items pertaining to the Heriot family and related families. Correspondence concerns family matters and family genealogy. Correspondence includes a copy of a letter (dated 1776) from Mary Ouldfield Heriot to her husband Robert Heriot, a letter (n.d.) to [Janie] from Sallie S. Trescott in Greenville (S.C.), a letter (1857) from Celia Pickford Miller in California to her mother Celia Pickford in London, and a letter (1884) from J.V. Patrick of Memphis (Tenn.) to A.J. Cady of Pearson (Ga.) which concerns papers requested by Mrs. Clara Heriot (sister of Dr. C.R. Hayward) pertaining to "certain lands in the states of Louisiana and Florida." Legal documents include part of a marriage certificate (1843) for Celia Pickford and Charles Frederick Miller, and a will (1880) of Harriet C. Clark of New York (N.Y.), written by Mrs. C.H. Heriot and witnessed by (Dr.) Anna A. Angell and Clara H. Heriot. The will names Harriet C. Clark's brother George Clark as executor. Other documents include a land grant (1857) for George W. Scott (for lands in Louisiana), and a grant (1844) signed by president John Tyler which grants lands in Mississippi to William Lile. Miscellaneous items include a plat (n.d.) of lands along the Mississippi River near Bunch Bend (La.) and a copy (1872) of an unfinished autobiographical "sketch" by Thomas H. Austin (b. 1811), son of Charles Austin (a native of Connecticut) and Sarah Moore Gibbes of Georgetown (S.C.). Charles Austin (d. 1837), a merchant, settled in Tallahassee (Fla.) and later became state treasurer.

The descendants of John Heriot (1664-1725) of Scotland emigrated to Canada and South Carolina. Robert Heriot (1739-1792) emigrated to South Carolina in 1759 and settled in Georgetown, where he became a merchant and plantation owner and married Mary Ouldfield (daughter of John Ouldfield and Anne LaRoche).
